TRADITIONS OF RUG WEAVING

Although almost everyone is familiar with Oriental knotted carpets, kilims are much less well known. Kilims are a type of flatwoven textile without a knotted pile and are most prominently found in Turkey and adjacent regions. 

Essentially nomadic in origin, kilims were produced for the practicalities of everyday life.  Kilims served as floor covers, tents bands, saddle bags, storage bags, eating cloths and prayer rugs.  Kilims were especially an integral part of a young women's dowry.  Woven with a sense of pride, duty and love, each piece contained symbols and motifs related to family traditions and tribal regional identities.  These symbols and motifs can often be traced back through archaeology to prehistoric periods and it is this intensely personal and idiosyncratic quality that make kilims today so popular.

In the past century, kilims were generally overlooked in favor of Oriental knotted carpets.  The collecting of flatweaves was the exclusive preserve of textile specialists.  The later "discovery" of kilims and their powerful and dramatic tribal appeal has led to a soaring popularity and has engendered a revival of the art of kilim weaving.

Today kilims are used extensively in  decorating homes and offices and blend beautifully in any decor from vintage to contemporary.   Their versatility and unique look at the affordable prices we can offer are worth giving us a call!
